    One of the most common mistakes is failing to verify the emission standards required in the destination country. Within the European Union, strict regulations apply and new trucks must meet EURO-6 (or even stricter when reading this blog) standards.


    Outside the EU, however, the situation is very different. Many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia still operate with EURO-3 or EURO-5 vehicles.


    Choosing a truck with the wrong emission classification can create serious problems during import or registration. In some cases, the vehicle may not be allowed to operate at all. Always confirm the emission requirements with the local customer or importer before purchasing a vehicle.

    One of the most common mistakes during international truck deliveries is selecting a commercial vehicle that doesn't match its intended application.


    Many buyers naturally focus on horsepower or payload capacity. While these are certainly important, they represent only a small part of the overall vehicle configuration. A properly specified truck is the result of balancing multiple technical components that work together to maximise safety, productivity and long-term reliability.


    One of the first considerations is the axle configuration. A 4x2 tractor unit designed for long-distance highway transport performs very differently from a 6x4 tipper operating in a quarry or an 8x4 chassis carrying heavy construction equipment.


    The wheelbase determines not only the overall body length that can be fitted, but also affects manoeuvrability, turning radius and weight distribution. The suspension system should also match the working environment. Rough terrain often requires reinforced heavy-duty suspension, while road-going transport benefits from air-suspension optimised for comfort and fuel efficiency.


    Where hydraulic equipment is required, selecting the correct Power Take-Off (PTO) is equally important, whether powering a tipper body, crane, hooklift system or water pump. Finally, payload requirements should always be considered before selecting a chassis. Overloading a vehicle or choosing insufficient axle capacity reduces operational efficiency and shortens service life.


    Choosing the right configuration from the beginning helps prevent costly modifications later and ensures the truck is engineered for the job it was designed to perform.

    Modern commercial vehicles can be equipped with an impressive range of advanced technologies: MirrorCam, Active Brake Assist, Active Sideguard Assist, Proximity Control Assist, Attention Assist and more. These have significantly improved safety and driver comfort on European roads.


    However, one of the most common mistakes in international deliveries is assuming the most advanced specification is automatically the best choice. In many export markets, reliability and simplicity are often far more valuable than having every available option fitted.


    Vehicles operating in remote mining areas, construction sites or rural regions are frequently exposed to extreme dust, heat and rough terrain. Under these conditions, sophisticated electronic systems may require specialised diagnostic equipment or technicians that simply aren't available locally.


    This doesn't mean sacrificing safety or quality. It means selecting technology that genuinely adds value while avoiding systems that unnecessarily increase downtime or maintenance costs. The objective is simple: build a truck that keeps working, not one that spends unnecessary time in the workshop.

  • 4. Ignoring Local Fuel Quality

    Another important difference between European and international markets is the sulphur content of diesel fuel. Within the EU, Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) typically contains 10 ppm sulphur or less, and modern EURO VI engines are built specifically to run on this fuel using systems such as DPF, SCR and AdBlue.


    In many international markets, diesel quality varies considerably. Sulphur levels can range from 50 to 500 ppm, and in some regions reach 2,000 or even 5,000 ppm. Higher sulphur levels can cause premature clogging of Diesel Particulate Filters, reduced SCR efficiency, increased maintenance requirements and higher risk of unexpected downtime.


    For this reason, many operators in Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia continue to choose EURO III or EURO V vehicles, as these drivetrains tolerate varying fuel quality better and depend less on complex after-treatment systems. Combined with additional fuel filtration and water separators, the correct engine specification significantly improves long-term reliability.

  • 5. Forgetting Climate Conditions

    One of the most common mistakes is assuming a truck configured for European conditions will perform equally well anywhere in the world. In reality, climate has a major impact on performance, reliability and long-term costs.


    A truck working in the deserts of the Middle East faces completely different challenges than one in the humid tropics of West Africa or the high-altitude regions of Central Asia. Temperatures exceeding 50°C, fine desert dust, tropical humidity, heavy rainfall, coastal salt exposure and reduced oxygen at altitude all place additional stress on a vehicle.


    Depending on the destination, preparation may include tropical cooling packages, reinforced cooling systems, cyclone air pre-cleaners, additional fuel and air filtration, corrosion protection, heavy-duty sealing for wet climates, high-altitude engine calibration, and heavy-duty suspension for rough terrain. Preparing a vehicle for its operating environment ensures it performs reliably throughout its entire service life, regardless of where it operates.

    One of the most preventable, and most common, causes of delays is incomplete or incorrect export documentation. A factory-new vehicle may be fully engineered and ready for shipment, but without the correct paperwork it simply cannot leave for its destination country.


    Key documents include the Commercial Invoice, EX-A Export Declaration, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, CMR Transport Document, EUR.1 Certificate, and T1 Transit Document. Every document must contain identical information: vehicle specification, VIN number, consignee details, destination and shipment references. A mismatched VIN doesn't read to customs as a minor error; it represents an entirely different vehicle.

    For companies in remote regions or mining projects, waiting weeks for a simple part can mean real downtime and financial loss.     A cheaper vehicle that experiences more downtime or requires frequent repairs can quickly cost more overall. For many companies, operational continuity is simply more valuable than the lowest purchase price. A truck in the workshop generates no revenue.

    A common misconception is that a vehicle and its body are separate components. In reality, they're engineered to function as one machine. A tipper body, crane, hooklift system or fuel tank each places different loads on the chassis, affecting stability, weight distribution and durability if not considered during the engineering phase.


    Professional body integration requires careful attention to wheelbase, chassis strength, PTO compatibility, hydraulic capacity, weight distribution, centre of gravity, mounting points and suspension performance. When engineered together from the start, the result is a vehicle that performs reliably throughout its service life. Adapting a standard vehicle after delivery is often far more expensive and can compromise safety.
